Dog Kisses

Since Marshall was down on their level all alone for a moment, the girls took advantage of the opportunity and gave him some little kisses with their big noses.

Hungry Girl

Looks like Grandma is too busy rocking Marshall to feed McKenna.

She's had to resort to getting her food from the TV.

Good thing it was Baby Einstein's Old McDonald show or else she might have starved to death!

First Dinner Out

Marshall went out to dinner at his first real restaurant (not a mall food court) recently. Thai food - yum! Of course he ate before we left so Marshall pretty much napped through the meal, but I figure that's the best thing for a baby to do at a restaurant. We were accompanied (driven, actually) by Matt, Jodie and McKenna.

I made our poor waitress take a picture to mark the big event. You can just barely see him hiding out in his car seat turquoise pacifier in his mouth, of course.

Two Months Old Today!

March 12, 2008

Wow! Time sure flies! I can't belive Marshall is already two months old.

I know I was going to try and do my past entries first and catch up to the present, but I couldn't let this milestone go unnoticed.

Today, while he was on the changing table (one of his favorite places for playtime!),I took some pictures of him. He was having fun smiling and laughing.

Later when I made him do some tummy time, he was not nearly as happy!

Big Bellies

November 2007

This is a picture of Erica and me from the beginning of November. She was about two weeks away from her due date (I think) and I was somewhere around 2 months away from mine.

Brad took this picture and I think it is pretty cute. How often do two sisters get to be pregnant and together at the same time?

Visitors from NC

Early January 2008

In order to see David for a bit and hoping for the arrival of a little one, David and Suzanne flew out to visit us. We had a great visit with them, but no new baby...

The doctors kept telling me the baby could come any day - even though I was still a few days away from the due date. Since there was no one new in the family by the time David and Suzanne arrived, I felt sure they'd be here when I had the baby and the little one would get to meet both sets of grandparents at once.

No such luck.

They were here for a long weekend and we mostly did a lot of hanging around the house and visiting. Also, they did a lot of dog walking on the Prairie Path and around the neighborhood. Since I spent the last month or so of my pregnancy limping around (as Mom said) like I had one leg shorter than the other because of a combination of a muscle pull and sciatic nerve pain, the poor pups were having to depend upon playtime in their wonderful, but small, backyard and the occasional visit to Matt's house for exercise. The dogs were already happy to have Dad home to play with them, but I think they were beside themselves to have their top walkers in town for a visit. What joy! Walks in the snow, walks in the rain, walks in the mud and they even got to show off how well they play with their cousins when we went over to visit Carter and Radar one morning.

While David and Suzanne were here, we had one of David's good friends and his family out for dinner. Farr and Kimberly have three of the sweetest, most well-behaved kids and it was such fun to have them out. Mom made us all a great meal, Dad helped entertain the little ones and the rest of us tried to catch up with one another's lives all the while wondering if Farr was going to have to jump in the car and rush Kimberly to the hospital since she thought she was having labor pains -- even though I was due about two weeks before her! What a pro - she was totally calm about the whole thing and we made it through the evening with no trips to the hospital.

All in all, it was a great visit for us and we hope David and Suzanne enjoyed themselves. We were only sorry to find out our little one takes after his dad and was determined to be late arriving!

Dad-to-be Comes Home

December 28, 2007

What a shock he came home to! I had been sending David pictures so he would know how big I was getting, but I guess they just didn't do me justice - or maybe I hadn't taken too many in the last month. He seemed to be truly surprised by what he found when he came home. I knew I was big, but I think I didn't know how odd I looked until I saw pictures of myself from those last few weeks. Yikes!

Here's a picture of us at our Post-Christmas Christmas celebration.

Later, David thought I might have my hands full with two dogs and a baby so he decided to see about taking one of the pooches back to South America with him.

Daisy looks pretty comfortable,

but, from the look on David's face, Fado has put on a few pounds. Guess she needs her running partner back home to stay!

Looks like I'm stuck with both of them here.

While he was "home", my due date came and went. The next day, we celebrated Matt's and David's birthdays. Here is a picture from that night - David, his carrot cake, me and my huge belly.

Kids for Christmas

Christmas 2007

What fun to spend Christmas with a houseful of family! This year I missed all my Texas and North Carolina family (and my husband, of course!), but it sure was fun to spend it with the Illinois crew and the little ones here.

While Erica and Douglas' son Joaquin (pictured here keeping Grandpa warm) was busy being adorable and snuggly, McKenna was full of energy and enthusiasm for opening all the presents.

Here she is discovering the car that Aunt Erica and Uncle Douglas gave her.

Meanwhile, I did a lot of sitting since I was huge, fairly uncomfortable (really for the first time since all the back trouble early on), expecting the baby any day, and actually pretty concerned it would arrive before David got here.

Ha! No worries there as it turned out!

Mom took this picture of my belly. I think only about half of it is showing!

Later that week, when David arrived, I overheard him telling a friend I looked like I had a beach ball under my shirt.

Puppies and Pillows

September - October 2007

Dogs and babies are always a bit of a concern. So far our girls have proven to be pretty tolerant of short people, but they've only ever been around them for short periods of time. With McKenna at the house with them everyday, I figured the months leading up to the birth of our baby would give me an opportunity to see how they would react and them a chance to get used to something new. What I didn't take into account was that they would be introduced to a BIG baby who was already used to dogs and accustomed to using them as her pillows when she wanted.

Good news was - they didn't seem to mind....too much. Daisy really appears to enjoy being a pillow most of the time - it is attention and that is what Daisy likes!

Mostly, Daisy figured out that she could use McKenna as her pillow too! One thing (besides food, of course!) Daisy likes more than attention is comfort.

Just hope she doesn't think the baby is her own personal tiny pillow!

Birth by Chocolate

October 2007

In October, Erica and Jodie threw me a wonderful baby shower. Since I'm just here for a little while, I don't have too many friends in the area. Keeping this in mind, they decided to do something that would only work for a small group:

A chocolate shower!

What could be better? They had it at Ethel's, a chocolate shop in the city, and it was incredible. Maybe the best hot chocolate I've ever had,

followed by chocolate fondue,

chocolate dipped strawberries,

and a little box of chocolates to take home.

If that all sounds just too rich and chocolaty to you, well...there is really no such thing - especially not for a pregnant lady! It was great and such a special evening. Erica even hired a friend to come and take pictures so we would have some nice photos of the night.

The only way it could have been better would have been if more of my family and friends could have joined us, but the ones who were here with me made it so special and memorable and those who couldn't were way too generous and sent tons gifts and warm wishes. I was overwhelmed by the kindness and thoughtfulness of everyone. This is one loved little baby!

Even our dogs managed to get into the act (with a significant amount of help from their ever thoughtful Grandma Suzanne).

Here's the diaper cake Jodie made for us. Pretty cute!

It was a perfect party - Thank you, Erica and Jodie!

Beginning

How did this all begin? Simple. My siblings have great ideas and I decided to copy them. When Erica first created her blog, I thought it was the best idea and something David and I should do. I mean, we are never in one place for very long and we both have such a hard time keeping in touch with people so it only made sense to me. True to form, I dragged my feet on it for a while and before I got one set up, Matt had created his own. Now, finally, I am getting to it. It would have been smart to get in the habit before the little boy arrived, but better late than never, I guess.

Starting with pictures and stories before Marshall's birth and working up to the present makes the most sense to me, but I'm sure things will get a little out of order so please bear with me.

And the title, well, that seems to be what occupies my life most now and for the forseeable future. Only the one kid of our own for now, but with so many cute cousins around, there is always more than one kid to consider!

So here we go...read these posts from bottom to top and you'll sort of get a picture of things as they happened!
